Trivium @ The Asylum, Birmingham – 19th June 2011

Trivium

No supports, no frills, no big production, just riffs, posing, pouting and a PA system louder than you can imagine.

After a long hiatus Trivium are back on a press tour of the UK to promote their new album “In Waves”. And as the band say themselves this is their first show in a long long time, not just their first UK show, but their first show of any kind since they toured the 2008 release “Shogun”

And what a place to come back, a small venue called The Asylum in the back streets of Birmingham.  To a lot of the locals The Asylum is still called the Madhouse (the rehearsal rooms next door) and the home of one of the UK’s best alternative clubs UPROAR. Tonight it was like a madhouse as Trivium take to the stage and the lucky 250 fans in attendance go crazy

The band tore through songs from there back catalogue including an amazing version of A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation, that was halted for a while after some issues with the drums.

After the drums were fixed the band picked up were they left off with Matt Heafy with the crowd firmly in the palm of his hand.  As expected the band were probably not as tight as they normally would be  but they looked like they was having fun.

It has to have been a long time since they did a show as intimate as this and will probably be a long long time before they do it again. With headline tours and supporting Iron Maiden later in the year, 2011 will be a great return to one the best metal bands around.

Trivium gave the crowd a sneak peak of a few tracks from the upcoming album. Even though the songs were new, the crowd didn’t let up for one second and moshed and threw the horns in the air in respect of a great gig.

I hope Kerrang Radio puts on more shows like this as it was a treat to see a big band in a small venue.
