DevilDriver Walking through the doors of the Wulfrun I heard Malefice kick off with their opening song a little ahead of the scheduled start time posted on the internet. I was eager to catch the whole set as I had been mightily impressed with them at another gig earlier in the year…..and I am glad to say they did not disappoint this evening.

Frank Turner A large crowd of sweaty, friendly, enthusiastic fans were there to greet him and his 2 supports of the night. The first, a comedy-musician going by the name of ‘Beans on Toast’ warmed the crowd up nicely with a fantastic blend of gritty, down to earth comedy and some truly melodic songs, a lot of which echoed the semi-anarchic folk-punk we were all waiting to hear from Frank.

Testament Local band Mindless Torture kick-off this evenings proceedings of Thrash and Metal mayhem at the Wulfrun Hall. With barely anyone in the venue at the start of their set, aside from a smattering of people up front whom I can only presume are die-hard fans, I find myself barraged with a wall of noise from on-stage...

Ned's Atomic Dustbin I have been watching The Ned’s since 1987, and seeing this gig billed as ‘Re-Union’ a little spark inside me started. Would the original line-up, featuring Tracey on backing vocals, grace the stage once more, treating us to ‘Out ov my tree’, ‘Plug me in’, ‘That’s Nice’, and ‘Turnaround’. Alas no. It’s the original line-up but Tracey is nowhere to be seen.

The Blackout The Blackout are getting very big, for a band that sounds very much like so many others out there, there must be something about them. I can't pin it down myself, their dual vocalists don't wow with intertwining melodies, nor do they even sing in harmony at any point - to the point that it seems silly to have two.

The Levellers I was not named on the guest-list for tonight’s gig, but after a little explanation about BrumLive a wristband was issued. As I got into the Wulfrun already on stage was a trio, not dissimilar to The Crow Man from Worzel Gummidge. They were whipping the crowd up with a sing-a-long sea-shanty song, but as soon as this was done they left the stage. This was Hobo Jones & The Junkyard Dogs, who play what they refer to as “skiffle punk”..

Friendly Fires Friendly Fires are just one of those new bands that pops up out of no-where every so often to capture my heart and my imagination - but blink and you might miss them. Their self-titled debut album is a sharp blast of 10 perfect poppy electro gems an I was interested to see how it would transalte live.

Gary Numan Tonight has started bad. The car park is full, due to some guy I’ve never heard of playing the main Civic Hall. Then the queue at the box office is massive, also due to that same guy, so I completely miss the support act. To be honest, I don’t even know who they were or even if there was one!

Terrorvision Fifteen years after the album “How To Make Friends And Influence People” came out, and eight years after their officially split, Bradford’s Terrorvision are back in Wolverhampton, obviously because they need the money - as far as I’m aware, this is the only reason all these “older” bands are getting back together, especially if they don’t plan on recording new music. At least they’re not jumping onto the arena package tour bandwagon, playing alongside Kim Wilde, Rick Astley and Big Fun...

Starsailor There are many mysteries in life, and one remains why Starsailor are still playing small venues like the Wulfrun. This especially true when bands such as Keane play much larger venues. Oh well, the Wulfrun it is, and oddly for a crowd comprising mainly middle-aged couples the security seems especially tight. All punters are searched and for the first time in my life I was asked to remove my car keys from my pocket which was then closely inspected by said security man.

The View The sight of The View finally gracing the stage is greeted by a deafening roar of anticipation, only heightened as bassist Keiren Webster shouts down the mic: “how the fuck are you?!” After an intro track which would not be out of place in a monastery, they move straight into first song ‘Glass Smash’ and the crowd get their first dose of front-man Kyle Falconer’s unique and unabashedly Scottish voice...

The Hold Steady I arrived very early at the Wulfrun Hall so it was a nice surprise to find there was an extra support band playing - local band Mr Bones and the Dreamers. I hadn't encountered them before but certainly plan to again. Despite being a young, and relatively new band, they played an impressively tight set - and with seven band members that's no mean feat. The stand-out song of the evening, 'Lend Me A Looking Glass', will be featured on their new EP, planned for early next year. Keeping an eye open for them is highly recommended...
