Mentions of ticker-tape, dancing animals, balloons, and more aside had set my imagination whirring before seeing The Flaming Lips. Their gigs have been described as transcendental celebrations of life rather than run-of-the-mill rock concerts, so I had high hopes my mind would be at least partially blown at some point at the O2 Academy in Birmingham.. |

I had an inkling that Steel Panther would be fun, no holds barred hair metal. I turned out to be bang right on that. What I didn't know previously was just how far their derivative concept stretched.. |

The last time that I saw the Twang was back in May 2007. It was in a room full of hot and sweaty post 25 year olds and the only real material that anyone had heard were the singles that they had released. More than two years down the line and two albums on I was really looking forward to seeing how far they had developed, and I certainly was not disappointed.. |

It was a night of new beginnings in Birmingham on Thursday. A new venue, a new band and a new direction for the city's biggest indie export of recent years. So as I approached the crowds of Editors fans, special guests and media-types queuing to get in relocated 02 Academy for the first time, I could tell expectations were high. Thankfully, not many would have left disappointed... |
