Torche Time doesn’t half fly sometimes. It barely seems five minutes ago I had set up residence at the Vivid warehouse last December to experience Capsule’s week long celebration of their tenth anniversary, coupled with their fabled Christmas festivities. Granted, November may have seemed a little premature for their final gig of the year, but after a hectic twelve months for the promoters - putting on everyone from Eyehategod to Cluster, making big strides with the Home of Metal project, another wildly successful Supersonic festival, and the small matter of maternity leave; noone could grumble that an early break this year wasn’t anything less than well-deserved.

Black Breath I blame Cursed for all this. Ever since the Canadian HC band dropped their first album back in 2003, a proliferation of like-minded bands have fashioned a similar sound in which their straight-ahead, ripping hardcore is run through with the heavy death n' roll of Swedish death metal legends Entombed.

Supersonic Festival With trees shedding leaves and skies casting a noticeably darker haze over the Custard Factory, Supersonic rolls into town for its latest instalment, this time casting a notably darker ambience across proceedings. With the festival shunting itself into October this time around, its acts seemingly followed suit into a realm of knowingly bleak approximation.

Modified Toy Orchestra As a lover of gadgets, unique instruments and all things experimental, the alluring and literally electrifying line up of Micronormous and Modified Toy Orchestra was more than I could withhold.

Wolves in the Throne Room Fresh from catapulting Kings Heath into the cosmos courtesy of Chrome Hoof a mere two days beforehand, Capsule returned to terra firma to give us a much earthier proposition this time round. On an oppressive, balmy Saturday evening the Hare & Hounds played host to the intriguing lineup of Tweak Bird and Wolves in the Throne Room, both of them playing their sophomore gigs for the Capsule ladies.

Chrome Hoof There was no way I was going to miss Chrome Hoof. Having released one of my favourite albums of the past few years with 2007’s ‘Pre-Emptive False Rapture’, which coupled with a rapturously received show at the old Bar Academy in December of that year–one of my favourite gigs ever – meant that despite landing from my summer holidays at 7pm, a few quid in a taxi drivers direction would be well worth it. Plus, for one night only, I was a jet-setting, globe-trotting Lester Bangs-esque journo for the night. Albeit it one sporting sunburnt man boobs.

Cluster In a moment of inspiration, that solid chap Mr. Aural Flea saw fit to purchase two tickets to this gig on the offchance I'd be able to make it! Make it? I moved every commitment aside for this. Cluster, with their roots in the late 60s, defined the roots of everything from experimental ambient to dance, with a mighty dollop of krautrock thrown-in for good measure!

Baroness The Hare & Hounds was packed out. Before the gig started the bars were full to the brim, with all tickets for tonight’s show sold out and a mad rush was on to get one of the ten or so tickets kept back for the door. Baroness have been gathering momentum and sizable column inches recently, and this jam-packed turnout was testament to their ascendancy.

Modified Toy Orchestra For the final time this year, the Vivid warehouse in Digbeth housed another chapter in the celebrations of local promoters Capsule's tenth birthday. Tonights extravaganza was coupled with the renowned Capsule Christmas party which over the years has seen everything from West Brom math-rockers Solway Fifth setting the scene for years to come, to Pelican and Mistress laying waste to the Medicine Bar, to Jesus Lizard Icon David Yow wanting to take Beestung Lips’ Thom home with him.

Lightning Bolt Looking forward to another wet cold night in darkest Digbeth can only mean another Capsule show, this numbering three out of ten for their tenth birthday celebrations this month. Boasting a return to Birmingham for perennial favourites and sonic demolition artists Lightning Bolt the lineup was bolstered by two support acts spanning widely varying styles, yet with a shared love of volume.
