Sundara Karma for the o2 Institute in September
Reading-based quartet Sundara Karma return to Birmingham to headline at the O2 Institute on Tuesday 20th September 2016. Support will be from Connar Ridd AKA Freak, and Liverpool’s The Night Cafe.
Since forming in 2011 Sundara Karma, who have previously claimed their indie-infused sound is “more refreshing than sunshine”, have built a devoted following thanks to relentless touring. NME promptly noted “hints of Arcade Fire and Bruce Springsteen in their powerful approach, all driving, rousing indie rock that proves that quartet can create euphoria more than one way.”
The quartet’s second EP, EP II, was released last November 6th via Chess Club Records (home to MØ, Tove Styrke and Swim Deep). Their debut album our debut ‘Youth is Only Ever Fun in Retrospect’ will be out in January 2017, available on pre-order now
For support Freak Chelmsford is a fairly dead end town, the sort of place young kids want to leave the minute the bright lights of London gets too close. Connar Ridd hails from Chelmsford, and he’s turned his frustrations into something positive. Choosing the alter ego Freak, he has been working hard ever since. Nasty, fuzzed out indie rock with a taste of barbed wire pop, Freak recently wrote, recorded, and released a brand new EP What Happened?.
Liverpool’s The Night Cafe are strongly attached to their home town, but eschewing the traditional musical heritage of The Beatles and The Coral. Returning at the start of this year with another shimmering chunk of lively guitar music in ‘Together’, the band have crystallised exactly how it feels to throw off the shackles of school life and be catapulted into a world of new experiences at eighteen-years old, all tied together with an infectious rhythm and melodic crispness more akin to Fleetwood Mac than any of Liverpool’s past icons.
