Searching For Sugarman star to play Birmingham’s Symphony Hall
Known for classic songs Sugar Man and I Wonder, folk singer/songwriter Rodriguez performs at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall on 11th March 2014, as part of the Searching For Sugarman tour.
Rodriguez spent years in the wilderness before returning to the stage in the last decade, culminating in a string of sell-out shows at the Roundhouse, Royal Festival Hall and around the UK in autumn 2012.
His story, documented in Oscar winning film Searching For Sugarman, is one of the most incredible in contemporary music. Having released two albums in the ‘60s that sold few copies, Rodriguez seemingly left his musical career behind and returned to a life of manual labour.
In the mid-70s the albums became cult hits in Apartheid era South Africa, where he would often be compared to Dylan and Young, completely unbeknown to Rodriguez and his family. Following a worldwide search, the folk singer was re-discovered and given the prominence that he and his rich body of work deserve.
Chloe Charles will open the show following two completely sold out performances at the EFG London Jazz Festival. She challenges all the stereotypes of black female singers, playing stunning classical guitar and writing songs that evoke the sound of fellow-Canadian Joni Mitchell.
