Interview – Andy Spillane from Arkks

Local band Arkks play The Flapper on 30th April. Brumlive’s Ian Dunn caught up with Andy Spillane for a quick Q&A.

What’s the story of the band? How did you form and what do you count as your biggest achievements so far?

Arkks started as a one man project. Just a hand full of guitar ideas. These ideas turned into full songs that I put up on soundcloud under an anonymous name (Arkks). Because of the overwhelming response i decided to take the music live.

What has been the best thing that has happened since you formed?

Since forming with live members Id say our latest EP is by far our greatest achievement so far.

When and where did you play your first show?

Death or Glory Records in Redditch was our first show. It was great, cool intimate show. Ideal first gig.

Who inspired you to play guitar

Iron Maiden and Guns N Roses! I was 8 years old and as soon as I heard their music I knew I had to play guitar.

What would be your dream venue in Birmingham to play?

I’ve played them all. But I do miss some of the old venues that have now closed. I use to like playing the Barfly.

What does the immediate future hold for the band?

Progress…. More shows, writing and just to enjoy it.

Apart from yourselves, what other unsigned West Midlands band(s) should we keep an eye out for?

We are playing with a band I really like on the 21st. A band called “IO” I love their music. Also my mates bands “The Catharsis” and “Hordes”

If you could have any band/artist cover one of your songs, who would you want to do it and what song would suit them best?

I would love to hear “Cult of Luna” cover “Today” from our EP. That band has been a massive influence.
