Girli

Girli + Louis III @Mama Roux’s, 24th April 2023

Accompanied by a sole keyboard player, Louis III opened the show ahead of Girli at Mama Roux’s on a warm Birmingham Monday evening. The London based singer songwriter has amassed a staggering amount of Spotify listeners (2M!) considering the small venue he was supporting at, however once he took to the stage it became instantly clear why. Blessed with a soulful and clear as glass voice, his career thus far has been driven on being the featured artist on various collaborations including Lucas Estrada and David Puentez, both of which tracks were performed as part of his set.

Following the release of her new single ‘Cheap Love’, Girli’s the F**cked It Up tour found it’s way to Mama Roux’s on Monday evening. Hailing from London, Amelia Toomey known professionally as Girli, has been building her devoted fan base following the release of her debut album ‘Odd One Out’ in 2019.

Joined on stage by a live vocalist and drummer, the main thing that immediately became clear was the extra bite and energy that Girli’s songs pack in a live environment. Tracks such as ‘Day Month Second’ and ‘I Really F**cked It Up’ had the packed crowd bouncing and singing along as was the procedure throughout the entirety of the hour-long set. A varied but youthful crowd, there was plenty of discussion around queerness, anxiety and self-expression that clearly appealed to the devoted fans that hung off Girli’s every word.

In a fabulous way, Girli found the ability to flit between being an intimidating individual to being very open and vulnerable within an instant, making her very engaging but personable. Pop music in it’s purest form but with a visual edge makes for the perfect artist to today’s TikTok generation and Girli is clearly reaping the rewards of this.
