On the eve of the release of her brand new single ‘Swing’, on Thursday night singer songwriter Ellie Dixon found herself headlining the Sunflower Lounge to a packed out Birmingham crowd.
Rising in popularity during the pandemic with the help of TikTok and some fantastic songs to boost, in the live arena Ellie Dixon makes use of guitar and keys as well as looping systems and sound effects to reproduce her songs live.
Opening the show with ‘Sucker’ and ‘CEO Of Watching Television’ what became most obvious was Dixon’s fantastic ability to mould ear worm melodies along with humorous and relatable lyrical content.
Littering her own songs with covers including Britney Spears ‘Toxic’, Shaun Mendes ‘How Long’ and TLC’s ‘No Scrubs’ allowed Ellie to keep the crowd engaged regardless of how much of her
own material they knew.
But it’s not just the tunes that provided a show, it was the comedic showman aspects that brought something extra to the live performance. Whether the free biscuits offered around the crowd, handwritten lyric boards to help the crowd sing along unreleased track ‘Godzilla’, blow up baseball balls for new single ‘Swing’ or donning an hilarious blow up Spaceman costume during her encore of ‘Space Out’.
This was clearly a show that had aspiration and talent well above it’s small head count and you can only begin to imagine what larger scale production and ideas that Dixon can bring the world.
The show was opened by local support Naomi Dawes.
