Dave Ballard @ The Station, Kings Heath – October 9th 2009
Set in a small upstairs room in the pub, this was David Ballard’s first outing as a solo artist.
This small venue soon filled up, with the vast majority of the crowd there to support Dave. Despite this being his first outing as a solo artist he showed very little sign of nerves. This is a big move as he has gone from the drummer in a band to being a one man band.
Dave showed good interaction with the crowd. It was quite a mellow low key gig, not many upbeat, room-moving songs but never-the-less everyone in the room got behind him including his ex-band mates, which was good to see and a confidence boost for him.
Half way through the set he had to restart one of his songs, but with cheers from the crowd he was unfazed by this started again and finished the song. The second half of the set was more upbeat than the first half but still a little slow. Dave is lucky enough to have a very early Bon Jovi-esque voice, which works well with his songs.
A very strong first outing for this new guy on the scene, he had a strong crowd behind him all the way through the gig. Would like to hear some faster paced, crowd pleasing songs, but over all a good gig and a one to watch.
