It’s been a while since Enter Shikari were last in Birmingham and tonight’s sold out gig at the academy promises to be one hell of night. |

We’ve all had the moments where you go and see a support act you’ve never heard of and not expecting to come out wanting to hear them again, but once in a while you find that needle in the haystack…this is one of those moments. |

I first came across Funeral Party about 6 months ago thanks to Zane Lowe’s music blog soonermusic.com and I haven’t looked back since. In that blog he featured a video showing one of their live performances and the music and energy basically blew me away, so when I got offered to review this gig I certainly wasn’t going to turn it down. |

It’s my first visit to the newly refurbished HMV institute and the old Barfly venue has scrubbed up pretty well. Although not the first night of the tour it’s the first night with the full bill, The Swellers has missed the previous gig in Leeds due to flight problems but thankfully everything was back on track for the Birmingham leg. |

Touring with their very fresh released 2010 album, ‘Odd Blood’, US, Brooklyn based, quote - ’Experimental rock, Psychedelic pop, Worldbeat sonic evangelists’, Yeasayer, have both fans and critics alike getting in to all sorts of thesaurian froths trying to draw metaphors of eclectic genre comparisons. Sonic buccaneers? Curators of the cosmic consciousness? Electro fusions for the inner-spaced out tantric troubadours? Possibly. The band concede that their muse might be seen and heard as, ‘Middle Eastern-psych-snap gospel.’ Hmm, that clears up any ambiguities then. |

Since the demise of Edwards No 8 on John Bright Street Eddies Rock Club has flirted with a residency at the Newt pub before settling into this, its current location, on Gough Street. It's a strange location; off the beaten track geographically and musically, it represents the real alternative to the O2 Academy's slew of fashionable indie gigs... |

It’s strange the way things pan out sometimes. One minute you’re at the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath preparing to review Black Gold and The Bookhouse Boys - Two bands I’d never heard before. But when an invite to review the gig comes from Black Gold’s PR manager, it’s rude to refuse and quite an audacious move when I discover Black Gold are the support act and not the main event. So, I’m just about to climb upstairs when my pocket starts vibrating with a message asking if I want to go and review Yeah Yeah Yeahs instead. Oh, and one more thing “They’re on in 30 minutes!” Sorry guys, I’m sure the gig rocked but come on? This is YYYS we’re talking about here… |

Touring forthcoming album See Mystery Lights, YACHT are an American performance duo who explain at length where Oregon is (it's on the left, up a bit form California) and spend their set in full occupation of the stage, backed by an elaborate powerpoint... |

Pigeon-holed as Geek Rock, criticised for being too serious, whilst at the same time being too eccentric, Young Knives never seem to get the plaudits that they deserve. For the average NME pundit they are a set of awkward customers, steeped in tweedy Englishness combined with being a bit too well-spoken and a having look that's not too MTV friendly. They don't fit the model. |

Red Light Company have seemed to appear as if from nowhere, although they have been in existence since 2007. Much of the press that has been printed this year and late last year makes them out to be the saviour of the British music scene, praise that can have a detrimental effect on those that cannot live up to the hype. |

The second date on the sold out '777 tour', You Me at Six supported by Emarosa and The Spill Canvas at the O2 Academy was set to be an awesome show. The line to get in tonight was enormous some fans lining up in the cold from 9am! |
