Often the Birmingham Live! crew can seem obsessed with the bigger names who are merely passing through our region when there is a lot going on, on our own doorstep. The West Midlands scene is a vibrant and thriving one and is not just limited to Birmingham.

I’ve known about Walsall based band The Assist for some time but I haven’t managed to see them live so last night I attended their sell out single launch gig at The Victoria in Birmingham. Their single ‘The Assist’ is released on 13/10/14 and available on iTunes.

I really liked their set, it was a very energetic atmosphere as they played for 40 minutes and throughout I thought how they sounded quite similar to well-known indie/alternative bands such as The Libertines, Oasis and The Enemy. Songs which I really liked last night were 1,2,3,4, Speak It Aloud, The Rave, The Assist and Control.

If you’re a fan of hard hitting, raw and gritty indie music then The Assist are right up you’re street; they’re a band that are going from strength to strength and currently touring various places in the UK. They’re also well known on the West Midlands music scene and have been featured on BBC Introducing and XFM.

Here is the the video to their new single:

Their songs are on Soundcloud  and to keep up to date with them follow them on Twitter @TheAssistBand. I’m looking forward to seeing them again already, definitely a local band to keep an eye out for.
